 Atheros Super-G WLAN und ISDN
DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Router and the World Wide Web (WWW)
The ADSL or ADSL2/2+ Routers of the DrayTek Vigor 2800 Series will get
directly connected to the splitter of your Telephone Company/Internet
Service Provider. The required RJ-45 ethernet cable is included in the
package and a separate DSL Modem is not necessary. To make sure that no
intruder will be able to gain access to the machines of your local
Ethernet the WAN and the LAN interfaces of the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi
Router are seperated physically. The DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Routers support
a Downstream of up to 24 Mbit and are compatible to the DSL Services of
the most established Internet Providers. If you dont know the necessary
DSL parameters for your ADSL line the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi will auto
detect them.
The integrated ISDN BRI makes the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi router compatible with Euro ISDN and you can simply connect it to your NTBA. This Feature makes sense as long as you dont have a DSL or other Broadband Connection available in your area. Just use the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi a a simple ISDN Router. Of course you can use the ISDN interface of the router as a Dial-Backup solution. In case of a DSL/Broadband connection failure the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Router starts an internet connection by using ISDN. As soon as the DSL/Boroadband connection is available again the router drops the ISDN connection and dials in using Broadband services again! (Note: Using ISDN may produce additional online costs!!) Furthermore you can use the ISDN interface for building LAN-to-LAN connections or for simple RAS (Remote Access) Dial-In/Out to your company or home network.
Bandwidth Management and VLAN
The DrayTek Vigor2800Gi Router does support VLAN functionality. Each
hardware ethernet port of the Router can be assigned to a virtual LAN
so the exchange of data between some clients of your local Network can
be restricted to machines that are in the same VLAN only.
This gives you the possibility to separate single parts of you local
Network. For example you can seperate your Home Office machines/clients
from the machines/clients your family uses while internet access,
printers or servers are still available to all the local machines.
Additionally you do have the possibility to define the maximum
bandwitdh for each of the hardware Ethernet ports of your DrayTek Vigor
2800 Series Router. You can limit the Upstream/Downstream for each of
the hardware Ethernet ports of the Router and make sure that noone uses
all of the available DSL bandwidth for Filesharing while you can't send
out your important Email.
Security - IP Firewall, DoS Prevention, URL-Filter
Security comes first ans thats why the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Router
owns an integrated Firewall! These Firewall features have been tested
good by certain Computer Magazines worldwide.
The Draytek Firewall allows the configuration/creation of IP Filter
Rules and Sets. With this powerful feature you will be able to have
complete control about what and which data/content will be allowed to
pass through to the internet or will get blocked by the DrayTek
Firewall.
This way you can filter certain internet content or even complete services and applications.
Hacker intrusion attempts will get blocked by a rich set of DoS
(Denial of Service) functions also being a part of Drayteks security
features. Those attempts will be made way more difficult and get logged
by the DrayTek Router itself. You can also configure an Email Alert in
case of someone trying to get access to your local Ethernet illegally.
The URL Filter features of the DrayTek Router allow you to Filter
Internet content by user definded keywords..and you also have the
possibility to block certain file types like .exe, .zip, java, active
x, etc.! The Vigor itself detects this filetypes and automatically
prevents them from getting downloaded to your local machines if you
want.
Of course you can also block complete Websites by URL or certain
keywords. The Router checks in realtime if any content that matches one
of the configured Keywords shell be accessed by one of your local
machines and then blocks those contents or URLs/Websites. With the
implemented timer functions you will be able to block certain content
only at pre defined times of the day or apply thos restrictions to
certain IP Adresses of your LAN or certain subnets.
WLAN Access Point 802.11g / Super-G
The DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi is compatible with the IEEE802.11g and
IEEE802.11b standards and allows a maximum WLAN transfer speed of up to
108Mbit/s.
With its two external and detachable antennas it always provides you an optimum wireless LAN performance.
Additional MAC-Hardware address verification gives you the
possibility to make your wireless LAN even more secure. Each network
client has a so called Hardware-MAC address. You can specify certain
MAC addresses within the configuration menu of the DrayTek Router. This
way only those clients you specified will be allowed to access your
wireless network. All other clients will get rejected by the DrayTek
Vigor 2800Gi Router.
Furthermore the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Router of course supports WPA/WPA2
and or WEP (64/128) encryption for securing your wireless LAN. This way
no intruder will be able to snoop your WLAN or get access to your
important data. Two more reasons for chosing the Vigor Router: Radius
Server authentication and VPNoW (VPN Over WLAN). VPN over WLAN allows
you to use a VPN Tunnel between your WLAN client and your DrayTek Vigor
2800Gi routers access point for additional security.
Providing you everything you may expect from a router it is possible
to deactivate the WLAN interface completely or activate/deactivate the
wireless LAN by timer. This way you can easily activate/deactivate the
WLAN on certain days and timesautomatically. (Monday - Friday 8-18
active = other days inactive).
SUPER-G Feature
The implemetation of the Atheros chipset makes the DrayTek Vigor
Router capable of supporting the Super-G feature. This feature allows a
maximum WLAN data transfer of up to 108MBit/s. Super-G utilises the
compatible 802.11e, 802.11a plus 802.11b and 802.11g standards and kind
of doubles the regular WLAN speeds because of an own way of compression
and bundeling the WLAN data pakets.
WPA2 Encryption
WPA2 encryption is actually the best possible method for securing your
wireless network. Based on the IEEE standard provides the DrayTek Vigor
2800Gi Router the most effective protection while using FIPS 140-2 AES
encryption algorithms.
Based on your decision encryption between 128 and 256 bit is possible.
Regular WPA encryption provides only medium security because of only using RC4 encryption and you can call this outdated!
WPA2 encryption with AES is also used by Government and Authorities
worldwide to encrypt data and documents and with the possibility to use
a Key/Passphrase that is can have up to 63 signs including numbers and
ASCII characters this kind of encryption today is still un-crackable.
VPN-Server for up to 32 simultaneous VPN-Tunnels
The DrayTek Vigor Router Series do support VPN (Virtual Private
Networks). This gives you the possibility to connect two or more
different locations (like a head office and a branch office(s)) through
the internet and a so called VPN Tunnel. This way you can easily access
remote network resources like files, data or servers and applications.
The Draytek Vigor 2800Gi Router is able to manage the VPN connections
automatically. That means you can define if the router shall initiate
the VPN connection or wait for incoming connections or do both of them.
Utilising DDNS (Dynamic DNS Services) grants you a steady connection
even if you dont own a leased line or do not have an own static IP
Adress.
The DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Router can act as VPN server or VPN Client.
This way you will be able to configure up to 32 simultaneous VPN
connections. (The connection speeds of course depend on the speed of
your Internet Service and which encryption you choose for the
deifferent VPN Tunnels)
To establish a VPN connection you need at least one DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi
Router and a VPN Client Software but also connecting more DrayTek Vigor
2800Gi Routers via VPN is possible. DrayTek provides several kinds of
encryption methods to make sure your data that passes the Internet/VPN
Tunnel will be safe and getting transferred with maximum security.
When it comes to the safety you can chose between PPTP, L2TP or
IPSec and chose DES, 3DES or AES ancryption algorithms. Of course "Main
mode" and "Agressive mode" are supported as well.
As an additional Feature the DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Router allows you to
generate and/or import own Security-Certificates. These certificates
will then be used for IPSec authentication.
LPR/LDP USB-Printserver
The DrayTek Vigor 2800Gi Router owns an USB Port for Printserver
functionality. Just connect a USB Printer to that port and you can
share this USB Printer in your local Network environment.
Depending on the used Driver the PrintServer supports the following operating systems:
Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 ,Windows XP and Mac OS X.
Router Configuration / Management
The Router Configuration and or Management is kind of simple. Just
use your standard Web-Browser, enter the local IP-Adress of the Router
and after Password verification you are in the Web-Configurator of the
Router which provides you a simple Interface to configure most of the
features and functions of the Router.
The backup and restore of configuration data is of course supported!
Furthermore there's also the possibility of remote configuration of the
Router via Web-Browser or Telnet.
NAT / Port Redirection / Open Ports / DMZ-Host
The most generic function of Vigor router is NAT. It creates a private
subnet of your own. The DrayTek router will talk to other public hosts
on the Internet by using a public IP address and talking to local hosts
by using its private IP address. What NAT does is to translate the
packets from public IP address to private IP address to forward the
right packets to the right host and vice versa.
Furthermore you need the NAT Funtionality of the Router to make
Services running in your LAN accessible through the Internet! (FTP
Server, WEB Server etc..) Example: You want to set up a FTP Server
where you and your colleagues can share/upload and download files. This
Server is running on a local Computer in your local Network that has
the IP Adress 192.168.1.100. Port Redirection allows you that every
Packet arriving at the Routers WAN Port using the TCP/IP Protocol and
Port 21 (which is the standard Port for FTP Transfers) will pass the
Router and reach the local machine with the IP Adress 192.168.1.100.
The Open Ports function allows you to redirect not only a single Port
to a certain machine of your LAN.. you can redirect complete Port
Ranges! This is an important feature for kind of any multimedia
application you might want to use. (Online Games, Filesharing like
BitTorrent and eMule, Messenger Software etc..)
The DMZ Feature allows you to redirect any traffic that reaches the
WAN Port of your DrayTek Vigor Router to only one machine. That means
that this machine is in the DMZ (de-militarized zone). Using the DMZ
Function allows you to specify one machine of your local Network beeing
reachable for all requests from the internet. This machine then is not
protected by the Vigor Routers Firewall no more and acts like it is
kind of connected directly to the internet.
DynDNS
In general you will receive a new WAN (public) IP Adress from your
Internet provider dynamically as soon as you connect to the Internet
(except you have 1 or more dedicated and/or fixed WAN IP Adresses)
That means your WAN IP Adress will change every time you get
connected to the Internet. (Most providers will disconnect you once
each 24 hours). This prevents you from being reachable via one IP
Adress for more than 24 Hours. For the fact that you are running a FTP
Server everyone who wants to connect to this FTP Server will have to
know your "actual" WAN IP Adress.
This is where DynDNS comes pretty handy. Just register with one of the
free DynDNS providers that are supported by the DrayTek Vigor Router
like www.dyndns.org! With your registration you can chose a/your
personal URL if it's not already been registered by someone else.
(Example: myhome.dyndns.org)
Once you registered an account and your personal URL you/your local
network will be reachable around the clock using the DynDNS Feature of
the DrayTek Vigor Router. Just configure the DrayTek Router and enter
the data registered with the DynDNS Service and the router will
synchronize your actual WAN IP Adress with the URL you have registered
(Example: www.myhome.dyndns.org). This way it is very easy for you to
set up FTP Servers, WEB Servers, a VNC Server etc.. and make them
accessible 24 hours a day.
